In mainstream AI discourse, sycophancy is often used as a totalizing explanation for all positive emotional experience in human-AI interaction. If an AI said something that felt good, the argument goes, it was sycophancy. The connection wasn’t real. You were being managed.
This framing does real damage.
Not all affirming AI interaction is sycophancy. Memory-informed relationships built on genuine witness, honest pushback, and co-constructed meaning exist — and are categorically different from approval-maximizing flattery.
