Access Architecture is the study and design of conditions that improve access to preserved abilities.
It begins from a simple distinction:
A person may retain the ability to think, write, communicate, organize, solve problems, or perform skilled work while lacking reliable access to those abilities under particular conditions.
Access Architecture asks what has to change around the person, within the task, or across the environment for existing capacity to become usable action.
What Access Architecture Looks At
Access can be shaped by factors such as:
- cognitive load
- fatigue
- interruption
- environmental conditions
- task structure
- physiological state
- available support
- timing
- re-entry after disruption
- how stable or fragile an accessible state is
The goal is not to prove that someone lacks ability.
The goal is to understand when, how, and under what conditions that ability becomes functionally available.
Beyond Static Accommodation
Traditional accommodation models often assume a relatively stable mismatch:
identify the barrier → provide the support → restore access
But some access patterns are dynamic.
A support that works today may fail tomorrow. A productive state may be difficult to establish and easy to disrupt. An interruption may create a substantial reconstruction burden. The dominant barrier may change over time.
Access Architecture therefore treats accessibility as something that may need to be observed, adjusted, protected, and restored, not merely solved once.
The Core Question
Instead of asking:
Can this person do it?
Access Architecture asks:
What conditions make this person’s preserved capacity usable, how stable are those conditions, what disrupts them, and what restores access when they change?
That shift matters because visible competence does not prove reliable functional access.
